let admin applicants defend themselves
« on: September 18, 2019, 01:02:50 pm »
hi um title says it all (btw this is not linked in any way to any current or recent applicants, randomly thought about it)

basically there's this unspoken rule of applying for admin where when people vouch / devouch you it's better that you don't say anything even if you believe that what they said is false and would like to counter it. in the past(cba looking for applications) cases where applicants have argued with people have been denied for reasons(one of which, or only is the reason of defending themselves, labelled as "unable to take criticism" or "is toxic" or "cannot get along with people")

maybe we should let people defend themselves, so long as it doesn't just turn into an insult fest, that way you can also see for yourself the applicant's nature and how they actually respond to criticism and handling themselves in general

just some 2 cents i pulled out of my back pocket and threw on the street without caring where they'd land

Best Regards,
dominance,

I don’t agree, they can defend themselves but people shouldn’t have to answer that person they devouched or neutral, that person should listen to the devouchers reasoning and try to fix it

Sorry but I want to use something and state why applicants should not only respond to those who devouch and neutral them, but acknowledge what they say as it may help those who devouch understand how much the applicant cares.

Here is my first ever Admin Application for Tango, it was for SA on Jailbreak. Click Here.

It was mixed with devouches and vouches. But I was able to help prove that I had good intentions and would improve my maturity, how did I do that? By responding to those criticizing me and agree with or provide insight to my actions. From that I got SA, and later A-Team, and became probably one of the most experienced and well liked admins to ever play JB.. those were the good times...

Discussion is important, applicants should be able to respond to all who post.

I agree with Dom. Brown spat shit on my A-Team app and when I defended myself he said "You can't take criticism" which is not true at all. I can't stand it when someone says in an immature way bullshit on someones app. People naturally defend themselves either way, but the community needs to change and see that defending ones self is not immature/ not being able to take criticism.

Also another thing is, the team reviewing it already knows the person spitting shit is a retard. However they might change the opinion of others giving someone more devouches than vouches. Especially people like Brown that vouch retards that break rules, and devouch good people. ( not including myself )

It's generally a rule of thumb to not respond because you are infinitely biased towards yourself when going for an admin position. If someone is saying stuff like "hes toxic and immature", and if you truly aren't, then there should be enough vouches saying who you really are to weigh it out. While people do troll applications if they hate you, take any stats class or just do 20 minutes of reading to see the accuracy of surveys, which applications with the vouch and devouch system essentially are. There are never enough people fucking around with the poll (unless its a coordinated attack by 4chan or some shit), to truly skew polls in a way it would not have gone regardless. The scenarios where it is worth it to respond is so specific it isn't even worth entertaining.

tl:dr responding just makes you look overly defensive, and if you're truly a good enough candidate then the vouches will outweigh devouches regardless of your response

edit - aspect you just kinda proved the opposite point though... You said staff knows people saying bullshit devouches are not credible, so why bother respond?

Here’s a piece of advice:

If a complete idiot devouches you, don’t say anything back, if you’re a serious candidate and the community sees that they will disregard the comment.

If a well respected member of the community devouches you, you got some stuff to work on but arguing makes you look like a fool.

Thanks to @mooshu for that!

"the only reason there was a constant feud is because characters was flaming the hell outta blue in the first place. sure, blue have had made a few false giveaways but its not like that really hurt anyone. if you say he made that giveaway to target philly and characters, well first of all, its his giveaway, his rules, they were being dicks to him at the time, note that. if you are devouching him because of the "feud between philly and characters" then you need to pull your head outta your ass and figure out the fucking details. blue wasnt the one starting it, he tried stopping it but the retarded 12 year old continued and then played the victim card after being called a baby. you're all immature as hell. all you people do is hold online grudges against people you don't even know. honestly, why hold hatred towards someone you've never met in your life. sure, he made a few mistakes, but its an ONLINE COMMUNITY. people are gonna argue and have disagreements but you can't let THAT ONE TIME blue made a mistake because of his "false giveaway" be blues ultimate decider. TAKE NOTE: blue DID NOT start the feud, HE WANTED IT TO END in the first place, then gets called a bully and a targeter because he called a 12 year old a baby after that kid was a huge dick head and deserved whatever he got."

Everyone should be able to defend themselves from unfair criticism if that’s what they feel it is.

Tbh, it's not really an unspoke rule. I always ask for honest ratings because the feedback makes you a better admin. Might just be me, but ya... That's how I feel ;)

The way I see it, people should stand up for themselves and be able to honor their own respect / self worth. If they feel people are just shitting on them unfairly in their opinions or if they’re very skewed, then they should be able defend themselves.

The only time we've ever put a stop to the applicants responding is when it blows up into an argument.

If they want to respond, nothing is stopping them. If they want to respond and be a cunt about it then we'll step in.
